Corrosion Engineers monitor hydrocarbon processing units in order to detect changes in operating conditions that will affect the performance and/or service life of the fixed units in the refinery. These duties include failure analysis of units, evaluating corrosion control programs and the metallurgy of piping systems based on process conditions and making recommendations for improvement. Part of these duties includes inspection of welding procedures and tracking rates of corrosion in critical process units.
