The Eagle Ford Shale is named after the town of Eagle Ford, Texas. This hydrocarbon-producing formation, or ‘play,’ is unique in that it is capable of producing both gas and oil.
The Eagle Ford Shale is a hot area for oil and gas production. Petrohawk Energy drilled the first Eagle Ford Shale wells in 2008, and numerous other energy companies have followed suit.
Thousands of new wells are being drilled in the Eagle Ford play every year. For a little historical perspective, drilling permits totaled just 94 in 2009 but soared to 4,141 in 2012 … and the numbers keep going up. All this activity means a big boost to the Texas economy, creating thousands of new jobs.
