Gaugers test oil in storage tanks and regulate the flow of oil into pipelines in accordance with refinery standards and regulations. Gaugers must have experience in testing oil using calibrated steel tape and conversion, reading automatic gauges to determine flow rate, operating teletype, mobile radio and pumps, obtaining oil samples from breeder valves, and obtaining temperature readings from tanks. Gaugers must also know how to inspect pipelines, flanges, and valves for loose connections and leaks and have the skills necessary to clamp seals around valves in order to secure tanks. Gaugers are crucial in preventing tank overflow and ensuring the refinery operates safely with regard to potential leaking hazards and line breaks.
