Pipe inspectors closely inspect pipe sections, steel tubing, drill pipe and other pipeline materials for defects by using magnetic and optical scanning equipment. Pipe inspectors must know how to operate scanners and place them properly on pipe in order to obtain integrity readings along the section of pipe. They must be knowledgeable in reading scanner graphs that indicate metal blemishes, cracking, and molecular weakness in pipeline materials. Pipe inspectors must also know how to inspect the interior of pipe for surface imperfections by using optical instruments and be familiar with any software associated with this process.
Pipe inspectors my report any findings to the appropriate engineering personnel as per regulatory guidelines and company standards.
