Last but not least, this is the entry-level job where most people get their start on rig crews, if they have no related experience. It’s a very necessary but genuine “go-fer” job involving heavy lifting, loading and unloading, scraping, painting, post hole digging and the like. A roustabout often gets ahead by showing a good team attitude and competence when helping the roughneck at tasks such as assembling drill pipe sections, threading the drill bits and helping with basic equipment repairs, as assigned.
Roustabout pay usually starts around $11.50 per hour and some college students in petroleum engineering or other college oil-related studies take roustabout jobs as summer work, to help defray their educational expenses.
